New Season 2009 - 10

17/10/09 Timperley Villa Away

1's Period:
A great start from Wythenshawe with some good early passing and movement. On 10 minutes a blow, Timperley send a long ball up and keeper and defender leave it for each other, 1-0 down, unlucky as we are the better team.
2nd Period:
A fantastic start 1-1, good battling form Josh on the left corner of the area he wins two tackles and squares it to Kam on the edge of the area, he take a touch to set himself and then fires it into the roof of the net. A great finish. It gets better two minutes later 2-1 up, a great pass from Matthew  from the centre circle puts Joe in on goal, he shoots from the right hand corner of the area low and hard and scores off the post.
Just before the break it's 2-2, a free kick on the halfway line goes straight in over the Thomas which he could do nothing about, a great strike.
3rd Period:
A good start from both teams who are both going for the win but it's Wythenshawe who go 3-2 up. Good strength from harry who holds off a defender to get a shot on goal, the keeper can only parry the shot into the path of Matthew who is their to score from 2 yards out. It look like we might get the win, but with 2 minutes to go it's 3-3. A shot from just inside the area goes through everyone's legs and finishes in the bottom corner.
All in all a great game, we were unlucky not to win.

Man of the match: Matthew. A great midfield performance from the captain, never stopped running and passing, a very creative game.

JJB TOURNAMENT– 24th November 2007

Match 1 – WAFC     Vs     Ashton on Mersey

Wythenshawe started strongly, pushing up and getting stuck in. Within 3 minutes our efforts paid off with a superb goal from Matthew. Some great runs forward kept Ashton on their toes, both Matthew & Jax forcing their goalie into action. But Ashton were still in the game and some great defending from Aaron & Harry kept our lead. With just a minute to half time Damon made a crucial save, a promising first half, finishing 1-0.

We started the second with the same energy and after two minutes Matthew struck home again. Aaron and Harry cleared the ball every time Ashton were in play. George with a blasting shot which just went wide.  Harvey put some lovely balls in from the wing with great opportunities for Matthew and George but it was Harry who got on the end to score our third. Liam was battling in midfield, keeping the ball in our possession and Ashton under pressure. With seconds to go we won a corner and a great ball in from Matthew gave him a hat trick!

Final score 4-0. A fantastic all round performance.

Man of the match: George

Match 2 – WAFC     Vs     Longhey Juniors

The game started back & to, both teams matching each other. After three minutes we conceded a free kick near the area and Longhey took full advantage, blasting the ball in. Minutes later a legendary throw from George went straight into the goal, but was sadly disallowed. We continued to battle, some nice passing between Aaron, Liam & Jax. Just before half time we won a free kick and a great effort from George just went wide.

The second half was just as tough as we fought to equalise; Matthew and George kept up the pressure and Damon made a couple of superb saves. However Longhey were pushing back and 5 minutes in they got their second. Just before full time a blast from Harry was deflected, wining us a corner; the ball in, away from Longhey and straight back from Aaron. But Longhey were quick to clear it and the whistle was impending.

Final Score 0-2. An unfortunate result, we know we can be better.

Man of the Match: Damon

Match 3 – WAFC     Vs     Broadheath

This was never going to be an easy game; Broadheath so far unbeaten; and a goal in the first two minutes left us slightly rumbled. However we battled back, some great throws from George and constant pressure from Matthew and Jax. Harry and Aaron were quick to defend but nothing could stop Broadheath’s second and as they continued to attack, Damon stepped in with two cracking saves. George cleared the ball but Broadheath got to it first and slammed it in for a third.

The second half started just as badly for us, Broadheath scoring from a corner in the first minute. But then we began to compose ourselves and turned the attack on them. Tom battled with the Broadheath defence and we had a couple of great chances; Matthew with a great pass to Harvey, the ball just going wide, and a massive throw from George right into the box, just too far for Harvey to hit home. A couple of great saves from Damon kept our hopes alive, but that all important first goal just wouldn’t come.

Final Score 0-3.  A good effort against a very good team.

Man of the Match: Damon

Player of the Tournament: George

JJB TOURNAMENT – Saturday  13th October

Game 1 – Unicorn (B)

Our first ever league game and we were all nervous. Our friendly in the run up to this tournament had been tough and we were not sure how we would stack up against the other teams. We started well with some good runs forward from Jax & George, but Unicorn were strong and every time we advanced, the ball came back to our half. Two great saves from Tom kept us in the game and we began to find our feet. An unlucky decision gave Unicorn a free kick near the box – which resulted in a goal. The pressure was on and the ball was backwards and forwards but just before half time they got a second goal.

In the second half we were stronger and the pressure was on them now – a great shot from Harvey left the goalie grappling for the ball on the line. 4 minutes in we were awarded with a penalty for a hand ball. Matthew composed himself and coolly slotted home. From then on the ball remained in Unicorn half with Aaron and Mark passing the ball up the wings, desperate for that equaliser that just wouldn’t come.

Final Score 2-1. A superb first performance that could easily have been a win.

Game 2 – Unicorn (A)

4-0 down after 4 minutes and we knew they were a good side. They had some big lads and this seemed to dent our confidence. But then something clicked and we began battling – Jamie had some good runs up the left wing and Matthew put some great tackles in, causing problems for them in midfield. Just before half time Jax made a great save, keeping the half time score at 4-0.

In the second half our defence was tighter allowing some great runs forward; Tom up to Matthew, who took a shot on goal – their goalie tipping it away. Our efforts were rewarded a few moments later with a great goal from Eathan. We continued to battle, with more of the possession and some strong advances, but their early goal lead gave them a good win.

Final Score 4-1. A weak first half, leaving us with too much to do, but a superb second, more than matching Unicorn.

Game 3 – Benchill

We started strongly and a great goal from Jax gave us the lead 2 minutes in. However Benchill were not giving up and equalised a few moments later. The game was anyone’s and we continued to battle; a save from Aaron out to Mark, to Matthew, to George and back again. Harry put in a great shot from the half way line, narrowly missing the goal. A superb throw from George had Jax on the end of it, but their goalie was on his toes and got his hands to it. Aaron made a couple of great saves but just before half time they scored, making it 2-1.

In the second half we were pushing up, determined to equalise. George had a great shot – saved, Matthew with a header – saved, Eathan with a chip – saved. We created so many chances but the goal was just out of reach. With full time looming, a bad tackle on George gave us a free kick. Our final opportunity to equalise – just outside the net!.

Final Score 2-1. Another great performance, and an unlucky result.

Man of the tournament – Matthew, didn’t stop all tournament!
